Study Claims Most Dentist Discuss Tobacco Use With Patients

Dentists could play a pivotal role in curbing tobacco use.

A recent study was conducted regarding how much dentists know about their patients’ tobacco use and what they do to prevent it.

The results showed that 90 percent of dental providers stated that they asked their patients about their tobacco use on a regular basis. The numbers also stated that 76 percent counsel their patients while 45 percent offer tobacco cessation assistance.

Looking further into the numbers, when a practice has at least one hygienist, cessation assistance was often associated with the practice. Other factors that resulted in cessation assistance were (1) using a chart system that includes a tobacco question, (2) having a dentist who received some sort of tobacco dependence training and (3) having a positive attitude about treating tobacco use.

The study also concluded that providers who did not offer assistance but would alter their practice patterns if they were reimbursed for the changes were more likely to be in a group practice and/or treating Medicaid patients.

  1. This is so good. People don't realize that tobacco use can have serious adverse effects on their mouths, not just their lungs. Our dentist got my husband to quit smoking by telling him about the dangers of it and what it could do to his teeth and gums. It really is a good thing that most dentists do that for their patients.

  5. Tobacco is terrible for your teeth. I used to smoke, and it almost destroyed my mouth. I quit a few years ago, and I visit my dentist often. He is helping my teeth to recover from the smoking. I am glad that my dentist is willing and able to save my mouth. http://www.olympiadentalcenter.com

  6. I'm glad that the majority of dentists ask their patients about their tobacco use. Maybe all dentists should have some kind of tobacco dependence training? It could definitely improve the health of a lot of people.

  7. I'm glad to hear dentists helping their patients like this. It's one thing to clean someone's teeth, but it's something else to get to the root of the problem and offer honest suggestions. Tobacco can cause a lot of oral problems, and dentists should make their patients aware of that. | http://www.cosmeticdentistryedmonton.com

  8. I don't know if her dentist ever said anything about it, but I know that her dental health was a main reason that my mom quit smoking. She was losing a lot of teeth, and the ones she didn't lose were cracking and turning yellow. I remember how much her teeth improved after she quit. I hope that people find something that helps them to realize that they need to quit smoking. Whatever it is that helps draw this conclusion is definitely a good thing.

  10. I think it would be a good idea for dentists to talk about tobacco use, because the dentist can see and show them direct effects of their tobacco use. It might stop a few people from using them. It's not healthy for the rest of your body either, but at least with your teeth you have some physical evidence of it. http://www.galleriadentalcentre.ca

  11. That is a good thing that most dentists are discussing tobacco and its affects on teeth. This is a great way to get people to stop smoking and keep them healthier as well. Tobacco really does have a bad affect on your teeth and your health. At least dentists are doing their part to help people quiet smoking and take better care of their bodies.

  12. It is great that most dentist are talking to their patience about tobacco use. It is still a major problem today. There are a lot of people who are willing to quit but do not know how to quit like they want to. It is important for dentists to show an interest and want them to live a healthier life. http://www.magnoliadentalva.com/cosmetic-dentistry

  16. This makes sense to me. Tobacco use can stain teeth, which no one wants. Dentists can do a lot of good just by informing their patients of what to avoid. Everyone whites a bright, white smile. http://www.mandurahdental.com.au

  19. It's actually really interesting to me that dentists discuss tobacco use with their patients. Though, I suppose it makes sense that they should, since tobacco can have an affect on your oral health. It seems like a good way to approach educating people on what can and can't cause problems for their teeth and gums.
